Bannockburn Poet wins Costa Book Award

Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie who penned the chosen poem to be inscribed on the replacement timber ring beam of the iconic 1960s Rotunda monument at the Bannockburn heritage site, has been announced as the winner of the Poetry Award at the 2012 Costa Book Awards.

Kathleen, who is Chair in Creative Writing at Stirling, won the award for her collection The Overhaul, which the judges described as being the “collection that will convert you to poetry.”

The Costa Book Awards recognise some of the most outstanding and enjoyable books of the last year by writers based in the UK and Ireland. This year, for the first time ever in the competition, a female winner features in every category.

Kathleen’s Bannockburn poem was chosen by through a public votes, and the deliberations of an expert panel including the Scots Makar Liz Lochhead. It will be inscribed on to the ring beam later this year as part of a wider project to conserve, restore and enhance the Category A-listed monuments at the Bannockburn site. Read the poem here.
